Liza and her border collie Martha are the best of friends — through thunderstorms, creek adventures, and quiet afternoons under the oak tree. This gentle pets story follows their bond from playful beginnings to a bittersweet farewell, and the flowers that help one little girl carry love forward.

Martha was a border collie, brown and white,
Who followed little Liza day and night.
They’d run and play beneath the big oak tree,
The happiest of friends, as friends can be.

Martha kept watch while Liza soundly slept,
And close beside her when the skies had wept.
When thunder boomed and lightning filled the sky,
Brave Martha stayed to keep her safe and dry.

One summer day by creek with waters cool,
Liza slipped and fell into the pool.
Martha jumped right in without delay,
And helped her to the shore without dismay.

Martha and Liza

They shared their walks and quiet reading time,
As Liza grew, year after precious time.
Martha’s muzzle slowly turned to gray,
But her loving heart was there to stay.

Then came the day when Martha grew quite ill,
And had to visit Dr. Jane until
The doctor said that Martha couldn’t stay,
And sadly Martha had to go away.

Liza’s heart felt heavy, sad, and sore,
When Martha wasn’t waiting at the door.
No wagging tail or paws upon the floor,
No friendly bark she’d heard so much before.

Martha's memory

Under the oak tree where they used to play,
Liza planted flowers bright and gay.
“These are for you,” she whispered with a smile,
“So I can think of you here all the while.”

Now butterflies dance where the flowers grow,
And memories of Martha gently flow.
Though she can’t see her friend with faithful eyes,
Martha’s love stays with her—never dies.
