A retelling of HOW THE ALPHABET WAS MADE from a Rudyard Kipling story.

Once upon a fun time, happy Taffy lived in a cozy cave with her mommy and daddy.

Taffy loved to go on adventures with her daddy. One day, they went fishing by a big river.

“Yay, fishing!” Taffy cheered as she hopped and skipped all the way to the river. Her daddy smiled and held her hand, making sure she was safe and sound.

“Oh no, no, no!” said Daddy with a frown. “My fishing stick went oopsie. It’s broken now!”

Tiny Taffy had an idea, “Don’t worry, Daddy, I’ll ask for help!”

Taffy saw a friendly stranger nearby. She was so glad! But uh-oh, the stranger didn’t know Taffy’s words, so she felt a tad sad.

But clever Taffy said, “Aha! I’ll draw a picture!”

Taffy drew and drew. She drew Daddy with his broken stick. She drew the new stick they needed. She even drew the way to their cave, making sure it was neat.

The kind stranger looked at Taffy’s masterpiece, then nodded with a grin so sweet! And off he ran, like a zippy-zappy rabbit.

“Yay!” said Taffy. “He’s going to get help!”

But the stranger didn’t understand the picture right. He thought Taffy and Daddy were in trouble!

He ran to Taffy’s mommy, showing the picture with a worried frown. Mommy saw it and gasped, “We must help!

All the cave people came zooming to the river. They were ready to help!

But when they got there, what did they see?

Taffy was making a flower necklace. Daddy was catching fish. Everything was okay – it was just a fun day!

All the cave people were confused, scratching their heads. Taffy explained her picture.

Everyone started to laugh!

“Taffy,” said the oldest cave person, “you made the picture talk! This is a wonderful new thing!”

From that day on, people started making picture stories. And that’s how writing began – all thanks to happy Taffy!
