A retelling of The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo from Just So Stories Kipling
Once upon a time, a little fluffy grey animal lived in the land Down Under, with legs shorter than a corndog. This animal loved to dance!
One day, he said, “I want to be extraordinary!” So he danced across Australia to see three very old, very wise Elders.
The first two wise Elders said, “Nope, can’t help you.”
But the third wise Elder smiled and said, “You Bet, little one! I’ll help you be extraordinary!”
He whistled for his pal Dingo, a big yellow dog with legs faster than a boomerang. “Chase that critter, Dingo!”

And off they raced, kicking up a dust storm.
When they reached a deep river, the little animal didn’t know what to do, so he tried jumping! In a desperate leap, he sprung with all his might.
Something magical happened. His front legs got smaller. His back legs got longer and stronger. He sprouted a tail, and before he knew it, he was bouncing around on two legs—he had become a kangaroo!”
Now he was the bounciest, hoppiest animal around! He got his wish. He was extraordinary, just like he wanted!

So, that’s how hoppy-go-lucky Joey (that’s a baby kangaroo) got his boingy legs.
Remember, little one, you’re extraordinary too. Now, snuggle up and bounce gently off to dreamland.
