A retelling of How Elephant Got Its Trunk from Just So Stories By Rudyard Kipling
Long, long ago, before elephants had trunks, there was a little elephant named Elbert. Elbert loved to ask questions about everything!
“Why is the sky blue?” he would ask.
“What do birds eat?” he wondered.
But his family often got tired of all his questions. Instead of answering, they would sometimes gently shush him.
One day, Elbert asked, “What does the Crocodile eat for dinner?”
His family gasped and quickly changed the subject. But Elbert wanted to know!
A friendly bird named Kolokolo heard Elbert’s question. “If you want to find out,” Kolokolo whispered, “go to the big river where the Crocodile lives.”
So, Elbert walked and walked until he reached the river.

At the river, he met a Crocodile. The Crocodile tried to trick Elbert and grabbed his nose!
Oh no! Elbert pulled and pulled. His nose got longer and longer!
When the Crocodile let go, Elbert had a long, funny nose. It wasn’t a nose anymore – it was a trunk!
Elbert was sad at first, but then he found out his new trunk could do amazing things!
He could pick fruit from a tree, splash water, and even make funny noises!

Elbert went back home. His family was surprised to see his new trunk.
“Wow, Elbert!” they said. “What happened? How did you get that? What can it do?”
Elbert answered each question. He was happy because everyone in his family started asking questions and learning new things together.
The end!
