Dayan crouched behind gooseberry bushes, ready to edge deeper under the branches. He watched as Maral entered the garden and disappeared from view. They were enjoying a lively game of hide-and-seek. While he listened for her footsteps, a Leap-frog emerged from behind a cluster of lavender. The Leap-frog winked at Dayan.

Curiosity got the better of him. He stepped out of hiding to signal for Maral to come quietly. The two children crept closer to investigate. To their surprise, they discovered three unusual friends: a Flea, a Grasshopper, and a Leap-frog, preparing for what seemed to be a jumping contest.

3 Hoppers in a jumping contest

“What are they doing?” whispered Maral, her eyes wide with wonder.

“I think they’re about to have some kind of competition,” Dayan replied, settling behind a large stone.

The three creatures were indeed inseparable friends with a shared love for adventure. They constantly challenged each other to exciting contests, but today was special. The magical Fairy of the Woods had appeared at dawn, promising to grant a single wish to whoever could leap the highest.

As Dayan and Maral watched from their perfect hiding spot, word of the competition spread throughout the garden. Soon, butterflies perched on flower petals, beetles gathered on leaves, and even a few curious birds settled on nearby branches to witness the epic showdown.

The Fairy of the Woods, glowing with a gentle golden light, called the garden to attention. “Welcome, one and all! Today these three friends will compete to see who can jump the highest. The champion will be granted one special wish!”

The Flea was the first to step forward. Dressed in an impeccable black coat that shimmered in the sunlight, he bowed elegantly to the audience on all sides.

“I was raised in the palace,” he announced proudly. “I’ve learned the finest manners from humans themselves.” The Flea had his heart set on wishing for a magnificent palace of his own, where he could host grand balls for all the insects in the garden.

Next came the Grasshopper, larger than the Flea but equally well-mannered. His vibrant green ensemble, a gift from birth, made him stand out among the garden dwellers.

“My family comes from an ancient Egyptian lineage,” the Grasshopper proclaimed with a slight bow. “I’ve recently moved into a three-story home made entirely of playing cards, with the Queen of Hearts herself serving as my door and windows.” The Grasshopper dreamed of using his wish to travel the world, seeing lands far beyond the garden’s borders.

The Leap-frog stepped forward last. Unlike his friends, he didn’t boast about his background or his home. He simply smiled and nodded respectfully to the audience. Though quiet, everyone knew him as a thoughtful soul who considered his actions carefully. The Leap-frog hadn’t shared his wish with anyone, keeping it close to his heart like a precious secret.

The Fairy raised her wand. “Let the competition begin!”

The Flea was first to compete. With incredible force, he propelled himself skyward so quickly that he vanished from everyone’s sight in an instant. The crowd gasped and murmured, straining their eyes toward the blue sky.

“Where did he go?” Maral whispered to Dayan.

“I don’t know,” he replied, squinting. “He jumped so high we can’t even see him anymore!”

When the Flea finally returned to earth, landing on a tall sunflower, the audience applauded enthusiastically. Yet, without being able to measure the exact height of his jump, it was difficult to determine just how impressive his feat had been.

The Grasshopper took his position next, his expression determined. He stretched his long legs, took a deep breath, and launched himself into the air with a mighty spring. Though his jump was graceful and carried him high above the garden, he only reached about half the height he had hoped for. Landing with a slight stumble, embarrassment colored his cheeks, but he recovered quickly and bowed to the audience with dignity.

“That was still quite high,” Dayan observed.

“Yes, but not as high as the Flea, I think,” Maral replied.

Now, all eyes turned to the Leap-frog. He took his place at the starting mark and stood perfectly still. Seconds passed, then minutes. The audience began to whisper, wondering if he might have forgotten it was his turn. The Flea and the Grasshopper exchanged puzzled glances.

Then, without warning โ€“ pop! The Leap-frog made a single, powerful jump. His trajectory wasn’t particularly high, but it was perfectly aimed. He landed gracefully on a lily pad directly in front of the Fairy of the Woods, who sat on her golden stool.

A hush fell over the garden as the Fairy’s lips curved into a smile. “What an extraordinary leap!” she proclaimed. “It requires not only physical ability but also intelligence and thoughtfulness to achieve such precision. Leap-frog, you have demonstrated something beyond mere jumping prowess.”

Rising from her seat, the Fairy announced, “The time has come to grant the winner’s wish!” She addressed the Leap-frog, “Your remarkable leap has earned you this magical opportunity. Share your heart’s desire, and it shall be yours.”

The Leap-frog thought for a moment, then leaned in to whisper his wish to the Fairy. With a gentle wave of her magic wand, a soft golden glow enveloped the three friends briefly before fading away. The crowd erupted in cheers, though no one quite knew what wish had been granted.

Meanwhile, the Flea and the Grasshopper stood to the side, their expressions downcast. All their dreams of palaces and world travels had vanished like morning dew under the summer sun.

Noticing their disappointment, the Fairy approached them with a kind smile. “My dear friends, remember that championships come in many forms. The Flea’s astonishing height and the Grasshopper’s elegant form were truly remarkable. Each of you possesses unique gifts worth celebrating.”

The wisdom in her words slowly sank in, and reluctant smiles crept onto their faces. They approached the Leap-frog and offered sincere congratulations.

“What did you wish for?” the Grasshopper couldn’t help asking.

The Leap-frog’s eyes twinkled. “I wished for all three of us to remain the best of friends forever, always supporting and encouraging each other through whatever challenges we may face.”

The Flea’s jaw dropped in surprise. “You could have wished for anything at all, and you chose… friendship?”

“What greater treasure could there be?” replied the Leap-frog simply.

At those words, the Flea and the Grasshopper felt their disappointment transform into something warmer and more precious. The Fairy had granted the Leap-frog’s wish, and in doing so, she had given all three friends something far more valuable than any palace or journey.

From their hiding place, Dayan and Maral exchanged glances of understanding.

“I think I just figured out why he won,” Dayan whispered. “The Leap-frog wasn’t trying to jump higher than everyone elseโ€”he was jumping to where he needed to be.”

Maral nodded thoughtfully. “Winning isn’t just about being the best, is it? It’s about knowing what really matters.”

Dayan and Maral discussing the lesson from our Hans Christian Andersen fairytale

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the garden, the three friends hopped away together, already planning their next adventure. Behind them, two children slipped away quietly, carrying with them a lesson more valuable than any game of hide-and-seek could teach: that life’s greatest victories are those shared with friends who have your back, no matter how high or low you jump.
