A fresh take on Aesopโs classic story of the tortoise and hare
Under five minute story for beginning readers.
Once upon a twinkling twilight in the whimsical woods of Winkenblink, there lived a speedy hare named Harvey and a thoughtful tortoise named Tilly. Harvey’s legs were like springs! He could hop and jump across the forest floor in a flash. Tilly, on the other hand, took her time, her sturdy shell leaving little trails in the soft earth.
The sun was dipping low, lighting the trunks of the forest’s trees with the last light of day. Harvey zipped down the path, the world around him blurring past. That’s when he spotted Tilly. She wasn’t walking so much as floating, her head bobbing like a boat in gentle waves. “Hey there, Tilly!” Harvey called, skidding to a stop. “Looks like the whole world is waiting while you catch up!”

Tilly lifted her head, a wise smile playing on her face.” Perhaps, Harvey, but at my pace, I see the beauty in every leaf and the story in every stone. Wouldn’t you like to see the world through my eyes, just for once?”
Harvey, with a puff of his chest, laughed heartily. “See the world at your pace? Oh, Tilly, I could run circles around the world before you finish admiring a single leaf!”
A playful breeze carried a hint of excitement through the woods. The animals whispered and chirped, their curiosity growing. Suddenly, Harvey stood tall, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Tilly,” he announced, “the forest is buzzing! Perhaps a friendly contest is just what we need. “What do you say? A race to the Sunset Stream โ the ultimate test! I’ll show you speed like you’ve never seen!” Tilly, with a serene smile, accepted. “And I’ll show you the world you’ve missed in your haste.”
As dawn broke, the woodland creatures gathered to witness this curious contest. A wise old fox was chosen to mark the course and declare the winner.
Harvey and Tilly took their places at the starting line. “On your mark, get set, go!” announced the fox, and off they went.

Harvey dashed ahead, a blur of fur and feet, leaving Tilly far behind. Confident of his lead, Harvey decided to rest in a cool patch of dappled sunlight beneath an inviting oak, his eyes closing just for a moment.
Meanwhile, Tilly continued at her steady pace, admiring the dew on the spiderwebs and the melody of the morning birds. She moved not with speed but with a quiet certainty guiding each deliberate step.
At midday, when the sun was highest in the sky, Harvey woke with a start. He raced as fast as his legs could carry him, the wind whistling past his ears. But nearing the finish line, he heard a chorus of cheers, whistles, chirps, and delighted squeaks. Then he saw Tilly, already there, surrounded by a jubilant crowd of woodland creatures.

Harvey couldn’t believe his eyes. “But how?” he gasped, out of breath.
With a gentle smile, Tilly replied, “You may have speed, Harvey, but never underestimate the power of slowing down and enjoying the journey.”
And so, under the canopy of twilight, the animals of Winkenblink learned a valuable lesson: that slow and steady wins the race and that the world is full of wonders for those who take the time to see them.
From that day on, Harvey and Tilly became best friends, exploring the woods together. Harvey learned the beauty of taking life one step at a time. Their story became a bedtime tale of friendship, perseverance, and the quiet lessons learned when we take time to understand those different from ourselves.
