A story of travel, trains, India, and determination.

Under five minute story for beginning readers.

Jane Ann was a very determined young girl. Even the pouring rain couldn’t stop her big plans. She was going to India today, come what may, to see her grandparents who lived far away! She’d packed her special box full of treats and even dressed Rabbit in his pink travel ribbon. Oh, how he wanted to come along! But India was so dangerous, full of fierce tigers, so he planned to stay bravely behind.

The rain just wouldn’t quit, though! Jane Ann closed her eyes tight and said, “Please, please, stop raining. It’s so important!” But still, the rain dripped down the window. Her friends Horse, Ball, and Rabbit watched sadly from the windowsill. “Maybe if I hold my breath extra long…” she thought. It didn’t work.

Jane Ann began to worry. Was this trip ever going to happen?

She felt a little sad. It would be such a long journey; it seemed impossible to get all the way to India by herself.

Just then, a cheerful knock came at the door, and in walked Aunt Mary. A giant box wrapped in paper and a big bow were placed on the table. With a smile, she said, “Jane Ann, it turns out you just may be a little bit extra lucky today!”

“What could it be?” cried Jane Ann excitedly. She ripped off the paper to find… a suitcase! A beautiful blue suitcase with her initials printed on it. Just the thing for an adventurous journey.

“But Auntie,” said Jane Ann, confused, “It’s not my birthday. My real birthday isn’t for many days still.”

With that, out popped Rabbit, Horse, and Cart, and even her ball for the long journey. They’d be waving her off right from the window!

Aunt Mary packed some sandwiches and cakes into her special food box, and Jane Ann realized all those chocolates meant she’d have plenty to share on the long journey.

Right then, the sun broke through the clouds, just like magic. With a hug from Aunt Mary and a wave to her toys, Jane Ann set off in a taxi to the train station.

Finally, the train whistle blew, and Jane Ann climbed aboard. As the train chugged along, she felt the excitement tingling all over. India, here I come!
