This heartwarming addition to our talking animal stories celebrates the power of imagination and teaches children to look for the magic that surrounds them every day. When curious little Maci discovers a magical door in her bedroom wall, she meets Zephan, a wise baby blue fox who shows her that the world is full of sparkly, wonderful secrets waiting to be found.

Maci was making a tower with her blocks when she saw something funny.

A tiny door—no bigger than her hand—had appeared on her bedroom wall. It had a shiny golden doorknob that went twinkle-twinkle in the sunlight.

“Hello, door,” Maci whispered. “Where did you come from?”

The little doorknob winked at her!

Maci rubbed her eyes. Doorknobs don’t wink, do they?

She crawled over and touched the tiny door with one finger. It swung open with a happy hum.

Inside was baby blue light and a small baby blue fox.

“Hi Maci!” said the fox. “I’m Zephan.”

Maci enters the little door

Maci wasn’t scared at all. She just said, “How do you know my name?”

Zephan’s tail went swish-swish. “I know lots of things. Like how you saw the stars dancing last night, but nobody believed you.”

Maci’s mouth made a perfect O. “You saw them too?”

“I did! Some things are special, and only special people can see them,” Zephan said. “Want to see something amazing?”

“Yes, I do.” Maci nodded up and down.

“Follow me!” Zephan said.

Maci peeked through the little door. On the other side was a flower garden.

”Is it far?” Maci asked, suddenly thinking about snack time.

“Just a little walk,” promised Zephan.

Maci crawled through the door, which grew just big enough for her to fit.

In the garden, butterflies fluttered around her. One landed on her nose and tickled her.

Maci giggled.

“This way,” said Zephan, leading her to a tree with silver leaves. Under the tree were a big, puffy pillow and a picture book.

“That’s your special book,” said Zephan, patting the cover with his paw.

Maci sat down and opened it. Inside were pictures of all the magical things she had ever seen: the dancing stars, her teddy bear waving goodnight, the raindrops that sang on her window.

“These are all the special things you saw,” Zephan explained. “Grown-ups forget to look for them. They say, ‘That’s just your imagination.'”

Maci smiled. “That’s what Mommy says when I tell her about the dancing stars.”

Zephan’s silver ears twitched excitedly. “The sparkly bits of the world are there when you keep looking for it.”

“How?” asked Maci.

“Easy peasy lemon squeezy,” said Zephan with a grin. “When you see something special or strange or wonderful – stop and look really, really close. Say hello to it. Ask it questions!”

Maci nodded. “I can do that.”

“I know you can,” said Zephan. “You’re very good at finding hidden treasures.”

Just then, they heard a voice calling from far away: “Maci! Snack time!”

“That’s my mommy,” said Maci.

“Time to go home,” Zephan said. “But remember – keep looking, okay? Promise?”

“Promise,” said Maci. “I cross my heart!”

Zephan led her back to the little door, and Maci crawled through. When she looked back, Zephan waved his fluffy blue tail.

Then the door closed and vanished, leaving just a regular wall.

“Time for apple slices,” her mommy called, coming into the room.

Zephan comes home with Maci

But on Maci’s bed was something new: a small, baby blue fox with sparkly silver ears.

“Mommy,” Maci said, holding up her new toy. “This is Zephan. He can see special things like me.”

“What a wonderful imagination you have,” her mommy said, smiling.

Maci hugged Zephan close and whispered, “That’s okay. We know about the sparkly bits of the world.”

And Zephan’s silver ears seemed to sparkle just a little bit brighter.

The End, from our talking animal stories, good night!
