A grandmothers love encourages Maya to look beyond surface flaws and discover the special qualities that make thingsโand peopleโuniquely wonderful.
Little Maya and her Grandma lived in a warm mountain house.
Right next door was a big bell.
“Look, Grandma!” said Maya. “The bell has a crack!”
“Can we fix it?”
Grandma just smiled and gave Maya a hug.
One night, Maya couldn’t sleep.
She slipped out of bed to sit by the window.
Tap tap tap went the rain.
The wind howled.
The bell began to sparkle.

The moonlight was shining through the crack!
It danced like butterflies made of silver.
The wind blew through the crack in the bell.
It was the prettiest sound Maya had ever heard!
Maya watched the dancing lights until morning.
Grandma had warm milk waiting in the cozy kitchen.

“Did you see something special?” asked Grandma.
“Yes!” said Maya. “The crack makes the bell beautiful!”
Grandma hugged Maya tight.
Maya smiled.
Now she knew – the bell wasn’t broken at all.
It was perfect, just the way it was.
