An adaptation for preschoolers of The Story of Gulnare of the Sea from 1001 Nights.

Once upon a time, a wise old man named Malik lived in a quiet town by the big blue sea. Malik loved to learn about everything—plants, animals, stars, and the sea. But sometimes, he felt a little lonely because he had no children to share his stories with.

One sunny day, Malik was walking along the beach when he saw a girl sitting on a rock. Her name was Gulnare. Her hair flowed like gentle waves, and her eyes were as deep as the ocean.

“Hello,” Malik said kindly. “Isn’t the sea beautiful today?”

Gulnare smiled and nodded. She was shy. Malik knew she was special. He visited Gulnare every day, and soon, they became good friends.

One day, Gulnare shared a secret. “I come from the sea,” she whispered. “My family lives under the water!”

Malik was amazed. “Wow! The sea must be a wonderful place.”

Gulnare smiled. “Yes, it is. But I like it here with you, too.”

Soon after, Gulnare’s family came to visit. They came right out of the sea! There was her mother, her brother Saleh, and her cousins. They were happy to see Gulnare and meet Malik.

Gulnare's family

“Let’s all be friends,” Gulnare said. Everyone agreed.

One morning, Gulnare and Malik found a baby boy by the sea. He had shining eyes and a sweet smile. They decided to name him Basim, which means “smiling.”

“Let’s take care of him together,” Malik said.

Malik and Gulnare find Basim

“Yes!” Gulnare agreed happily.

As Basim grew up, he learned many things from Malik and Gulnare. Malik taught him about the stars and the land. Gulnare taught him about the sea and its secrets.

Basim played with the fish in the water and ran with the children on the shore.

One day, Basim had an idea. “Let’s build a special place where everyone from the land and the sea can learn and play together!”

“That’s a fantastic idea,” Malik and Gulnare said.

Big house by the sea

So they built a big house by the sea. People from the town and friendly creatures from the sea came to the house. They sang songs, told stories, and shared their toys. Everyone laughed and had a great time.

Basim smiled and said, “When we share and play together, life is so much fun!”

And from that day on, the land and the sea were friends, and they all lived happily ever after.

Goodnight, little one. Remember, just like Basim, you can make friends and share your joy with everyone around you. Sweet dreams!
