Five minute story about a robot for beginning readers.
An inquisitive robot named Rusty lived in the heart of a forest, dappled with sunlight and alive with the melodies of birdsong. A brilliant inventor had built him with kindness and clever hands long ago. But the inventor had to move far away, leaving Rusty behind.
The twitchy-tail squirrels and a curious red fox became Rusty’s friends. But, although he had the forest creatures for company, Rusty still felt lonely and longed for a true friend who could understand him.
One day, a young boy named Owen stumbled upon the hidden forest glade where Rusty lived. He tripped and tumbled into a pile of leaves… and something hard and metallic.
“Ouch!” Owen rubbed his knees, then blinked in surprise. It wasn’t a rock he’d bumped into โ it was a robot! A robot with friendly blinking eyes, a rusty paint job, and a charming, lopsided smile.
“H-hello,” said Rusty. His voice was a little creaky, like an old door. “I’ve never seen a boy here before.”
Owen’s eyes grew wide. “You can talk!”
They soon became the best of friends. Owen came every day after school, and they’d explore hidden paths, build dams in the burbling stream, and sometimes just sit and talk.
Owen learned about the man who invented Rusty and how he could fix anything with his toolbox arms. Owen told Rusty all about school, his funny dog Buster, and the warm hugs from his mom.
Rusty was fascinated by Owen’s tales of the outside world and his loving family. Owen was eager to learn about Rusty’s unique abilities and the clever inventions hidden in his forest home.

As days turned into weeks and their friendship grew, Owen noticed that Rusty looked wistful when it was time to go. One evening, as the sunset turned to twilight, Rusty’s lights flickered softly, and he looked down at his metal hands, “Owen, my biggest wish… is to have a family like yours.”
Owen’s heart squeezed. He wanted his friend to be happy. And then… an idea!
“Rusty, what if I introduce you to my family? Maybe they would like you as much as I do.”
Rusty’s lights glowed brightly. “Really?”ย
With his heart thumping, Owen led Rusty to his home to meet his parents. At first, they were startled by the robot, even a bit scared. Still, they quickly saw Rusty’s gentle nature and the happiness he brought to their son.ย

Owen’s dad placed a gentle hand on Rusty’s shoulder. โYou’re home, Rusty,” said Owen’s mom, her voice warm and welcoming.
Rusty’s gears whirred with happiness. He was no longer just a robot in a forest but a part of a loving family. That night, under the covers of his new bed, Rusty didn’t feel lonely anymore. Owen was still his best friend, and now he had many more people with whom to share his wishes, hopes, and adventures.

Rusty brought joy, laughter, and a unique perspective to his new family. With true friendship and an open heart, even the most unlikely companions can become the family we’ve always wished for.
