A story of feeling anxiety about new experiences.

Alexander and the Sea Princess

Under five minute story for beginning readers.

Once upon a time, in a tiny village hugged by a vast, sparkling sea lived a Sea Princess, Belinda. Belinda was six years old, as brave as the fiercest pirate, and as wild as the waves that danced on the shoreline. With her shovel, she built magnificent sandcastles with towering walls and deep moats as if challenging the mighty sea to a duel.

Her laughter chimed perfectly with the sea breeze. With quick steps, she darted between the waves, her brown bathing suit matching the sandy shores. A sunhat of red and mauve bounced upon her head, making her look like a princess of the beach kingdom.

In a village quite far away, lived young Alexander Merryweather. His heart leaped joyfully when his father said, “We’re off to the sea!” Having never seen the ocean, Alexander was filled with wonder and some anxiety about the new and unknown.

When the day finally came, Alexander’s excitement bubbled over. He stepped onto the sandy beach, his eyes wide in awe. The sea stretched out forever, a shimmering blue mystery. His sister Margaret laughed with joy, “It’s so big and blue!” and his brother Stephen just stood there, quietly amazed.

Alexander has some anxiety about the new and unknown

But Alexander felt a deep connection to the sea as he watched Belinda play in the distance, her exuberant joy echoing around them. Seeing Belinda, Alexander’s anxiety was forgotten, replaced by a surety he didn’t know he had. He was inspired by Belinda’s spirit.

Together, they played on the beach. Belinda shared all she knew about the sea and shore. Alexander began to see that feeling uncomfortable about new experiences was just a part of an awesome adventure.

And so, Belinda and Alexander had the best day at the beach!

Belinda and Alexander have fun with new experiences.
