A story of child humor.

Under five minute story for beginning readers.

Once upon a time, there were twins named William and Wilhelmina Good. Their Papa, Mr. Good, was so excited when he heard the news! He decided, “I’ll name the boy William after myself, of course! For our dear girl, why Wilhelmina, what a splendid name! That’ll be just right.”

Papa was so pleased with himself until Mama had a word. She already had names in mind! She wanted to call them John and Jane. Mr. Good replied, “Hmm, Jane is quite nice, but William is such a strong name! We’ll call our boy Billy for short, isn’t that grand?”

Then something wonderful happened. Mama loved the nickname Billy too, though she didn’t quite love the name Wilhelmina. “Very well,” she said with joy, “if our sweet boy is Billy, it only seems fair to call our clever girl Billy as well! Doesn’t that sound delightful?”

And just like that, William and Wilhelmina were now…well, Billy and Billy Good! Now, Mr. Good wasn’t the most organized fellow, and though he liked to think he was very clever, even he started to get a bit muddled about who was who!

You see, Mrs. Good always tried to help by putting their names on their clothes. She’d write ‘William’ or ‘Wilhelmina’ on lovely labels. The problem was, sometimes her writing got a bit smudged and looked much more like ‘Billy’ on every single one! Then Mr. Good tried giving it a go, but those labels ended up more like a bunch of squiggles than anything anyone could read.

Luckily, their hair helped everyone figure it out. Wilhelmina’s hair had the prettiest curls. At first, the curls weren’t very curly, but Every night, Mrs. Good wet little Wilhelmina’s hair and wrapped it oh-so-carefully around her finger – that did the trick. William’s hair had some bounce, too, but nothing like his sister’s! One look, and you knew which Billy was which.

Billy and Billy in a story of child humor

One night, as Billy and Billy Good were tucked in tight, Wilhelmina whispered, “I must be the cleverest girl in the world, for I can hear things in the dark!”

“Hmm,” William mumbled sleepily, “I’m the smartest of them all! Why, I bet I can even hear snails not breathing.”

Then they heard a whisper outside the window, calling, “Billy! Billy!”

Wilhelmina nudged William. “That must be for you!โ€

No, no,” William mumbled, “that voice sounds very different when it calls for me.”

Their whispering became a tiny debate, each wondering who should peek out the window. After all, the mysterious voice might belong to someone new and fun or โ€ฆ

They held hands tightly and slowly moved to the window.

With a giggle, Wilhelmina said, “he has a green pointy hat and funny stripey stockings.โ€

“I think he’s got his boots on the wrong feet,” William added.

They heard a whisper outside the window

And who do you think it was? Perhaps a Tickle Goblin? Wellโ€ฆno one really knows for sure. Some say the wind was playing tricks, while others think it might have been a silly squirrel chasing its tail! You’ll have to decide for yourself. All we know is that Billy and Billy Good, after sharing a brave hug, fell sound asleep with dreams of green hats, squirrels, and maybe even a sneaky Tickle Goblin or two!
