An old fable and fairy tale retold from the Brothers Grimm.

Under five minute bedtime story for preschoolers.

In a big, old forest, there was a castle made of stone. A fairy named Vespera lived in the castle. She was called the Bird Lady because she loved birds! But Vespera was lonely. She wished she had a friend.

Vespera the fairy loved birds

One day, a sweet girl named Jorinda and a shepherd boy named Jorindel came to play in the forest. Jorinda liked to sing the happy song in her heart, and her voice was as beautiful as a bird’s. Vespera heard Jorinda singing and thought, “What a lovely bird she would make!”

Vespera had magic. She could change people into birds but didn’t mean to be unkind. With a wave of her hand… poof! Jorinda became a little bird.

Jorindel was very sad! He wanted to help Jorinda, but he couldn’t move. Then, a magical feeling filled him– his love for Jorinda!

Jorindel went on an adventure to find a way to help Jorinda. He met friendly animals and a wise woman who knew about a special star-shaped flower. The flower could break Vespera’s spell!

Jorindel found the flower and went back to the castle. He saw lots and lots of birds in cages! He found Jorinda, touched her gently with the flower, and poof! She turned back into a girl.

Jorindel used the flower’s magic to help all the birds turn back into people. Vespera felt sorry she had turned people into birds.

Jorinda escapes from the spell

Jorindel and Jorinda invited Vespera to their village, and everyone became her friends. Vespera wasn’t lonely anymore!
